snow at the equator

Mt. Kenya Trekking

Originally called Kere-nyaga by the Kikuyu tribes who settled around its base, Mt. Kenya is the physical and thematic center of Kenya's national identity. Straddling Earth's equatorial waistline, this mountain is truly unique, and still possesses a few of the last remaining and quickly diminishing equatorial glaciers.

The mountain cannot boast of being the highest in Africa. However, its beauty and physical

allure greatly overshadow those of Kilimanjaro.

Standout Adventures has been guiding on Mt. Kenya for many, many years now. We know each of these routes like the thread of our boot soles and we will bring you to the summit even under not every days weather conditions.

Our cooks and porters will make certain you are well fed and have plenty of strength to achieve your goal.

Take a few minutes to read each route description then contact us to reserve the dates for your individual journey.

Sirimon Route: 4 days trek

last rest prior summiting at shipton's camp at 4200m

This trek begins from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) gate at Sirimon where you will often see baboons running through the trees and across the grass field in front of the office. Elephants are sometimes spotted here as well. This route affords hikers with adequate acclimatization time for each day's ascent toward the peak. The first night is spent in the Old Moses camp situated at 3300m. The following two nights are spent at the base of Mt. Kenya's three highest peaks: Battion, Nellion, and Pt. Lenana - the highest point available without the use of ropes and technical climbing protection. Hikers will return to the gate along the same route as coming up.
